Share Stories, Spark Memories and Build Connections

Role Summary

Do you enjoy reading, listening to stories and spending time with others? As a Reading & Reminiscence Volunteer, you’ll help older people and those living with dementia reconnect with treasured memories through books, photographs, music, conversation and shared experiences. Your time can provide comfort, companionship and meaningful moments that enrich everyday life.


What You’ll Be Doing

  • Reading books, newspapers, magazines or poetry to residents and day centre attendees.
  • Supporting reminiscence sessions using photographs, memorabilia, music and conversation prompts.
  • Encouraging people to share their life stories, memories and experiences.
  • Spending time one-to-one or in small groups, helping everyone feel included.
  • Creating a relaxed, friendly and welcoming atmosphere where conversations can flourish.
  • Helping prepare resources and supporting activity sessions.

What We’re Looking For

  • A warm, friendly and compassionate nature.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills.
  • Patience, empathy and an interest in people’s stories.
  • Confidence reading aloud to individuals or small groups.
  • Reliable and committed.
  • No previous experience is required – just a genuine interest in connecting with others.

Time Commitment

Flexible to suit you.

Typically 2–4 hours per week, although we’d love to hear from you whatever time you can offer.

Training & Support

  • Full volunteer induction.
  • Ongoing support from our Activities Team.
  • Dementia awareness training provided.
  • Regular guidance and opportunities to develop your skills.
