What Funding Support Is Available?
There are many options when it comes to paying for care for your loved ones, However, Parkhaven understands it can be overwhelming and confusing.
That’s why we are here to answer your questions and put you in touch with other services who may be able to help you.
- What are my options when paying for care?
Did you know you may not have to pay for it all yourself. To find out if you are eligible for funding contact your local council. Your local council must carry out a care needs assessment. It’s free and it’s your legal right to have one.
The local authority will identify your care needs and check that they meet a nationally agreed set of criteria.
If you qualify for help, they have a legal duty to provide or arrange the services you need.
They will then carry out a financial assessment to work out if you should pay towards any services you need.

Council Tax discount
This discount (25% if you live with another person and 100% if you live alone) is administered by Sefton Council to those with a severe mental impairment (SMI). It’s not a nice way of wording things but it’s the law as it stands. SMI includes dementia. You also have to be in receipt of a qualifying benefit such as Attendance Allowance.

This discount can be backdated as long as you fit the criteria as described above.

- How does support from the local council work?
If you’re eligible for local council support, you’ll be given a personal budget and the local council must find you a home within that budget that meets your needs.
A family member or friend can pay an additional ‘top up’ if you would like to choose a different home to the ones the local council suggests.

- What additional financial support is available?
You may be eligible for various benefits and support such as attendance allowance and pension credit.

- What happens when my financial situation changes?
Over time your financial situation may change. This can mean that clients can go from paying for their own care to receiving some financial help.
Those receiving help could also be eligible for more funding if they fall below the lower financial limit. If you’d like to learn more about this, get in touch with us and we can help guide you through the process.
- Am I eligible for financial support?
When working out eligibility the local council will consider your assets. If these are above the upper limits, you won’t be eligible and will have to fund your care yourself. You may still be entitled to some additional help though. If your assets are near, or below these limits, you will need a care needs and a financial assessment from your local council to determine how much they will pay towards your care.

- How will my finances be assessed?
As part of a local council assessment, they will look at a mix of capital and income. The amount of capital and income you have will determine how much of the care you’ll need to pay for. That includes the value of your property, if you own one, income and any savings.
