Sharing music, creating memories, making connections.
For more than two years, Peter Cureton has been volunteering at Parkhaven Trust, bringing music, laughter and treasured memories to the individuals we care for.
Music has always been a huge part of Peter’s life. Taught to play the violin by his grandfather at just seven years old, he later learned piano and went on to teach himself guitar, ukulele and mandolin. Throughout his life, Peter has believed that music is something to be shared.
That passion is exactly what he brings to Parkhaven.
“The best thing about volunteering is being given the privilege of sharing music with others. It is a real joy.”
Peter performs an incredible variety of music, from classical and opera to country, pop, rock, blues and musical theatre, ensuring there’s something familiar for everyone.
Some of his favourite moments have been the quietest ones.
During one performance for a group of residents who were particularly withdrawn, there was little response at first. Then, during the fifth piece, Peter noticed one lady gently tapping her feet in time with the music.
“It reminded me that music can reach people when words sometimes can’t.”
On another occasion, after performing James Taylor’s Fire and Rain, a resident shared the story behind the song and the memories it brought flooding back.
Moments like these remind Peter why he volunteers.
Volunteering has also given something back to him. It encouraged him to pick up his violin again after many years, develop new musical skills, and focus his practice with renewed purpose. Often joined by his good friend Dave Owen, the pair create enjoyable musical experiences that residents and staff alike look forward to.
“Music has the power to connect people. Being able to share that with others is incredibly rewarding.”
At Parkhaven Trust, we’re incredibly grateful to Peter for the joy, comfort and companionship he brings through music.
Thank you, Peter, for making such a lasting difference.
