Role Summary
Sometimes, the greatest gift you can give is your time. As a Befriender Volunteer, you’ll provide companionship, conversation and a friendly face to older people and those living with dementia. Whether you’re enjoying a cup of tea, sharing stories, playing a game or simply spending time together, you’ll help reduce loneliness and make every day a little brighter.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Spending one-to-one time with residents or day centre attendees.
- Chatting, listening and building meaningful friendships.
- Sharing hobbies and interests, such as puzzles, board games or gentle walks around our grounds.
- Supporting people to take part in activities and social events.
- Reading together, looking through photographs or reminiscing about past experiences.
- Providing companionship and helping people feel valued, connected and included.
What We’re Looking For
- A warm, friendly and compassionate nature.
- Excellent listening and communication skills.
- Patience, empathy and kindness.
- Someone who enjoys spending time with people and building relationships.
- Reliable and committed.
- No previous experience is required – just a willingness to make someone else’s day a little brighter.
Time Commitment
Flexible to suit you.
Typically 2–4 hours per week, although we’d love to hear from you whatever time you can offer. Regular visits help build meaningful relationships and provide consistency for the people we support.

Training & Support
- Full volunteer induction.
- Ongoing support from our Activities Team.
- Dementia awareness training provided.
- Regular guidance and opportunities to develop your skills.
